Thereā€™s another story that I like about a Chinese general who had to defend a city with only a handful of soldiers from a huge enemy horde that was in all likelihood going to steamroll the place flat within hours of showing up.
So when said horde did arrive, they saw the general sitting outside the cityā€™s open gates, drinking tea. The horde sent a couple of emissaries over to see what was what, and the general greeted them cheerfully and invited them all to come and take tea with him.
The horde decided that this was a scenario that had ā€œMASSIVE FUCKING TRAPā€ written all over it in beautiful calligraphy and promptly fucked off.
Whoever that general was, he was clearly the Ancient Chinese equivalent of Sam Vimes.

ok but tbh that story misses a lot of the subtlety of the situation like ok
so this story is the Romance of Three Kingdoms, and essentially takes place between Zhuge Liang, resident tactician extraordinaire, and Sima Yiā€¦ OTHER resident tactician extraordinaire.
The two were both regarded as tactical geniuses and recognized the other as their rival. Zhuge Liang had a reputation for ambushing the SHIT out of his opponents and using the environment to his advantage, thus destroying large armies with a small number of men. Sima Yi (who kind of entered the picture later) was a cautious person whose speciality was unravelling his opponentā€™s plans before they began. So it was natural that the two would butt heads; however, since Sima Yi tended to have more men and resources, he started winning battles against the former. Which, yā€™know, kinda sucked.
On to the actual story: Zhuge Liang is all like ā€œshit i gotta defend this city with like 10 men.ā€ Literally if he fights ANY kind of battle here, he WILL lose; his only option for survival is not to fight. And thatā€™s looking more and more impossible until he hears that his rival is leading the opposing army. And then he gets this brilliant idea. He basically opens all the gates, sends his men out in civilian clothes to sweep the streets, and sits on top of the gate drinking tea and chilling out and basically makes the whole thing out to be a trap
When Sima Yi comes heā€™s all like ā€œyo come on in broā€
and Sima Yi is like ā€œyeah heā€™s never been that obvious about his traps before. this is definitely a bluffā€ and heā€™s about to head in when he realizes
wait. he knows that i think heā€™s bluffing.
and so he gets it in his head that maybe, just MAYBE, Zhuge Liang has this cunning plan that will wipe out his army - recall that he has a pretty good handle on what his rival is capable of. And after a long period of deliberation (which is just like ā€œhe know that I know that he knows that etc.ā€), being the cautious man he is, SIma Yi eventually decides to turn his entire army around and leave.
Zhuge Liang later points out that the plan wasĀ based specifically on the fact that he was facing his rival; if it had been anyone else, thereā€™s no way it would have worked. A dumber or less cautious person would have simply charged in and won without breaking a sweat.Ā 
and thatā€™s the real genius here: it was a plan formed entirely justĀ to deceive one man, and it worked.

Zhuge Liang is the most brilliant, sneaky-ass bastard in history. One time his sideā€™s army was out of arrows, which pretty much meant they were screwed. So Zhuge Liang goes and does the logical thing, which is build a fuck ton of scarecrows and put them all on boats. Then he makes the men hide in the boats and sail them out on the river.
Well, that day was super foggy (which Zhuge Liang had predicted. Did I mention he was also a freakishly accurate meteorologist?). So the enemy across the river sees a fleet of boats armed to the teeth with what appears to be half an army of men. They panic! and start firing arrows like crazy.Ā 
Zhuge Liang lets this play out for a while, then heā€™s like, ā€Ok guys thatā€™s enough.ā€ They calmly turn the boats around and go back to base, where they dismantle the scarecrows and pull out all the enemyā€™s arrows.
Zhuge Liang is legend.

I love this post. It just keeps getting better. Like seriously, I would have adored learning about this in World History.

Red Cliff is 50% bloody battles and 50% eye candy and about half of that eye-candy is due to Zhuge Liang

im very grateful for the lessons in photography i was taught in stop motion class because just now they made it possible to photograph the stars with my phone in spite of the camera usually not detecting the light of stars because theyre so dim,,,, enjoy these shiny motherfuckers
ok so if everythings normal, your phone camera should have a manual mode (sometimes called pro mode). in it, change the settings of the shutter lag to 20 seconds, then put the phone down on some stable, plane surface and press the photo button (usually when using your camera, the volume buttons can be used as photo button) and let the phone still for the whole 20 seconds.Ā 
(basically the problem with most cameras is that they dont have a very good light sensitivity in the dark, however that doesnt mean they cant detect it at all. the longer the shutter is open, the more light your camera takes in and the more burnt/light your pic will be, so in (literally) dark situations, make the shutter lag longer to get all that light you need! also i said 20 seconds but really you can make it shorter or longer depending on what kinda stuff you want for your stars)

Additionally, adjust your ISO to the highest number (mimics the film used for very low light and low speed images)
And set your shutter speed to the longest time possible (on my phone itā€™s 10 seconds).
Leave your focus settings on Auto, and if your phone camera has a timer option, turn that on (five seconds is generally enough).
Plan your shot first, then find a place to set your phone down so you can get the image you want. The less light pollution, the better; youā€™ll pick up FAR more stars in your picture.
Once you know what you want to shoot, tap your screen to ā€œfocusā€ it, then hit the button to take the picture, set your phone down, and back away from the ā€œtripodā€. Donā€™t touch your phone for a good 15 seconds, just to be sure.
You will not be disappointed in the results, let me assure you.
Not even a little bit.

One of the collegeā€™s traditional songsā€”which they strategically have students sing during their first weeks as Yalies and then again at the moment weā€™re conferred our degreesā€”goes like this:Bright College years, with pleasure rife,The shortest, gladdest years of life;How swiftly are ye gliding by!Oh, why doth time so quickly fly?Et cetera. The first time you sing it, you mumble the words and donā€™t know a single person around you. The last time you sing it, wearing the mortarboard and gown, youā€™ve got the lyrics memorized and youā€™re surrounded by some of the most important people in your life.That summer, with ā€œHow bright will seem, through memā€™ryā€™s haze/ Those happy, golden, bygone days!ā€ still ringing in my ears, I started CHECK, PLEASE.Ā The comicā€™s first panels emerged on an ancient laptop, through a borrowed bamboo tablet, and on a free drawing program called gnu-IMPShop.Ā I had no plan. I wanted to explore my newfound fascination with hockey and share silly cartoons on Tumblr. But unconsciously, I also wanted to pour the nostalgia of those bright college years into the Haus, Faber, Samwell, and Bittyā€™s story. I wanted to bottle up those moments where we grow and change and fall down and pick ourselves back up.Ā Drawing CHECK, PLEASE was how I revisited those experiences and how I sifted through the bittersweet feeling of concluding something I loved. Perhaps this is why finishing CHECK, PLEASE calls back those same emotions. Just as Bitty would bake affection into a pie, I might have encoded into CHECK, PLEASE the heartfelt fondness I had for my time in college, the love of the friends I made there, and the gratitude I have for my own growth.I have always found it easier to express gratitude face to face. And even though I would not have gotten to meet all of you, the greatest downside of being unable to participate in a book tour is that I canā€™t say thanks in person. I could write a thousand words, yet they couldnā€™t replace a high five at a bookstore signing or a handshake at a convention. The Truth: A lot of trans people do not possess obvious signs of their transhood as children. Lots of people discover themselves later in life. Your age does not dictate your transhood.Ā

The truth is that, biologically speaking, there are more than two sexes and the only true way to identify such is throughĀ karyotypes. Third genders and nonbinary genders have existed through out history, it is not new. The greatest minds in science have time and time again repeated this information, that sex isnā€™t a binary, that nonbinary people exist, that trans women are really women, trans men are men, and that nonbinary people are nonbinary. Even Bill Nye has said this.
Claim: Things likeĀ ā€œstargenderā€ orĀ ā€œnoungenderā€ are ruining the representation of the trans community. /Ā ā€œNoungenderā€ is just children trying to get attention and are not actually trans. / People using neopronouns or nounself pronouns are not really trans.
The Truth: This in inaccurate and often times either a bullying tactic towards those who are different, or transphobic people using such to isolate a group of trans people. Some people do not fit into the binary or gender nor feel like theyā€™re in any defined nonbinary genders. So theyā€™ll define themselves with words and terms they enjoy. Itā€™s no different from you feeling more comfort from being calledĀ ā€œheā€ versusĀ ā€œshe.ā€Ā
